Alumni Week - Big Sister Cindy Coffin-Myers
We’ve enjoyed spotlighting some of the many volunteers who served as Bigs through the years during this Alumni Week – part of our celebration of National Mentoring Month this month. Their dedication to our youth is invaluable – and our final honoree is no exception. We have to go back a number of years to find our last honoree of the week…Cindy Coffin-Myers, a COUL Big.
She may not be in Berks County now, but Big Sister Cindy stays in touch. She says she has tons of great memories and experiences with COUL: “The kids were amazing and seeing their faces light up when someone wanted to hear about their day or take time to sit with them to play or learn something new was worth it every single week, every single time I would see them.” BS Cindy adds, “I’m not sure who needed who more. As an adult, it was just as good (if not better) for me to know that when I walked through the door at BBBS of Berks, at any given time, there were going to be probably a couple dozen kids counting on me and the other volunteers to help them learn something or have some kind of crazy fun for a couple of hours.” She says, “I wouldn’t trade my time with them for anything.”
COUL (the Club Of Unmatched Littles) – one of our group-mentoring programs – provides immediate mentoring services to our community-based Littles while they await a One-To-One match. As part of the program, we hold at least weekly activities for our COUL Littles – and COUL Bigs are required to come to at least six (6) activities a year. Between COUL and our second group-mentoring program Teen, we hold 60 to 65 group-mentoring activities per year. COUL Big Cindy, however, attended 50-75% of those activities during the years she volunteered.
