Congratulations, High School Big Mireliz!

We are so proud of Mireliz Bermudez -- the recipient of this year's Ed Shultz Scholarship!Mireliz graduated from Oley Valley High School, where she was a Big Sister with our SMART (Students & Mentors Achieving Results Together) program there.  Mireliz is starting her new chapter as a student at Messiah University, where she will major in Elementary Education with Special Education and a minor in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and ESL (English as a Second Language).  She wants to become a teacher outside of the United States -- teaching children from third-world countries before settling back home.Mireliz was presented with the $2,500 scholarship before yesterday's Reading Fightin Phils' game -- where family, friends, and colleagues of Ed Shultz gathered to pay tribute to him and his lifelong commitment to the Berks County community.  In addition to his professional roles, Mr. Shultz served on numerous boards including Bethany Children's Home, Olivet Boys & Girls Club, the American Red Cross, and more.  In honor of his work and in his memory, Customers Bank created the Ed Shultz Scholarship Fund.  The scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior with plans to attend a 2-year or 4-year college or technical school.Mireliz was accompanied at the presentation by her mom Mynele Carabello-DeJesus and stepdad Melvin Padilla-Santos.
