The Greater Reading Chamber Alliance presented a Building Berks award to the Carriage House Activities Center and some of the people who made it a reality. The Building Berks Awards & Trade Expo took place October 16th at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Reading; and the Carriage House Activities Center won in the Non-Profit category
. Executive Director Jim Smith, Board President Karen Meck, and Capital Campaign Chair Jason Hornberger were on-hand to accept the award — along with representatives of Dolan Construction and Muhlenberg Greene Architects.
The Carriage House Activities Center project got its first boost from Leadership Berks, when a group of its participants conducted a feasibility study for the project. BBBS of Berks then formed a Capital Campaign Committee to raise the necessary funds. More than 100 companies and individuals in Berks County donated toward the mini-Capital Campaign which raised more than $270,000 for the project.
Previously unused since the agency purchased the property in 2001, the Carriage House Activities Center provides a safe, comfortable, inviting area for Little Brothers/Sisters to socialize and participate in BBBS program activities. It is also a meeting and interview space as well as training sessions for Littles, parents/guardians, and Bigs.
