2019 Annual Awards

Congratulations to our Annual Awards recipients for 2019!  Our Annual Awards are given out each year as part of our Annual Holiday Party, which was held December 19th.

Out-going Board President Karen Meck was honored as our David Hyman Volunteer of the Year.  Karen has been on our Board for nearly seven years and has served on a number of Committees including our Capital Campaign Committee, the Planning Committee, and so much more.  During her tenure as Board President, Karen has overseen major changes in policies, technology, and branding at the agency.  She epitomizes the term “Defender of Potential.”

Karen also accepted the Corporate Sponsor of the Year award on behalf of Santander Bank — which has provided our agency with a $10,000 grant over the past three years to conduct financial literacy training for our TEEN program participants.

Little Jade was honored as our COUL Little of the Year!  Jade is very active in both our COUL program and our TEEN program. Youth Activities Coordinator Shannon Farrow says Jade is always considerate of everyone else’s feelings and always comes to the agency with a smile.  Shannon added that Jade is always willing to lend a helping hand to clean up or help with the younger Littles.

This year’s COUL Big of the Year is Big Sister Lori Raser — who attended an impressive seventeen (17) COUL and COUL & Match events this year, far exceeding the six-activity requirement.  BS Lori has made herself available at all times stating “whenever you need help, just give me a call.”  Not only is BS Lori dedicated to our community-based programs, but she also participates in our school-based program at Glenside Elementary School in Reading.

Our Community Champion of the Year has helped many right here in our agency’s neighborhood including us.  Kaj Skov is actually our next-door neighbor.  He watches over our property and assists in seasonal maintenance of our property without being asked.  He weeds in the Spring; plants flowers for us in the Summer; gets rid of our leaves in the Fall; and removes snow from our sidewalks in the Winer.  I guess you could say he is a four-seasons friend to Big Brothers Big Sisters!

Not pictured is our TEEN of the Year.  Little Brother Fotis is outgoing and very positive, and is quite active in our TEEN program as well as our COUL & Match activities.  He has been matched for about two years now.  He strives to improve academically, and his efforts are certainly not going unnoticed.  Not only is he active with BBBS, but our Teen of the Year is involved in extracurricular activities, volunteers at a local fire company, and helps with his church youth group.

Other honorees who could not attend:

  • Match of the Year:  LS Yaranicy and BS Maria Balthaser
  • Community Partner of the year:  Pat Dolan & Dolan Construction
