An Independent National Study:
According to an independent study released November 16, 1995, from Public/Private Ventures (P/PV), Little Brothers and Little Sisters who met with their Bigs regularly for about a year were:
· 46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs;
· 27% less likely to start drinking;
· 52% less likely to skip a day of school;
· More trusting of their parents/guardians and less likely to lie to them.
The study went on to say that “Other programs providing similar youth with One-To-One adult relationships supported by the kind of thorough screening of volunteers, careful matching, and extensive supervision required by BB/BSA can expect to produce similar impacts. In mentoring programs without this infrastructure we have found that relationships evaporate too soon for effects to be possible.”
As a service of prevention and intervention, the Big Brother Big Sister program successfully keeps youth out of detention services, in school, and an active part of the community. And, with numerous mentoring program offerings, the opportunity to help make a difference has never been easier for an interested volunteer!
