· Big Brothers Big Sisters of Berks County, Pa is celebrating 40 years of service to Berks County youth!! The agency was formed in 1968 and serves over 300 kids each year through 4 different mentoring programs. In 2007, we provided over 20,000 hours of supervised mentoring services to nearly 300 at-risk youth.
· The agency is affiliated and has received the highest professional standing from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (our national agency mentoring kids for over 100 years), most recently receiving a perfect score of 100% on a thorough national evaluation
· Our focus in Berks County is providing mentoring services for children from single-parent households lacking a positive role model (we are not a counseling or residential care facility)
· Quality services and the safety and welfare of our Little Brothers and Little Sisters is our number one priority
· Children served range in age 8 through 19 and represent each and every corner and school district across the County (applications taken up to and including 15 years of age)
· All of our program services are FREE!!!
· Approximately 35% of our annual budget is underwritten by the United Way of Berks County while the other 65% is covered by grant writing and internal fundraising events such as the annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake campaign (Spring), Brick campaign (year-round), and Annual Golf Invitational (Summer).
· The agency conducts and sponsors over 50 mentoring activities each year for our Bigs and Littles (all provided for free)
· The volunteer application process is thorough but not arduous and includes very informative and fun training sessions
· We offer an emergency beeper system for our Bigs and Littles 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year from Noon – 10:00 p.m.
· You can mentor for as little as 12 hours per year in COUL or as much as 8-10 hours per month in our One-To-One program
